In spite of our late newsletter announcement, we had twelve attendees for our second Italian red tasting held at my home on October 2. We tasted two wines from a local Italian importer, Ray Jones**, and three wines from Martin’s Wine Cellar* in New Orleans. These wines were several steps up on the quality scale from the ones suggested by Total Wine for our September Italian red sampling and are listed here:
- 2022 Lohsa Morellino si Scansano* $16.98
- 2022 Poliziano Rossi Montepulciano* $15.99
- 2016 Oro Nero Piemonte DOC Rosso** $40.00
- 2020 Cascina Delle Rose Barbaresco Tre Stelle * $64.99
- 2015 Antonio Roncolato Della Valpolicella DOCG** $75.00
We accompanied the wines with Italian meat balls in marinara sauce, and had some brownies available for a “chocolate” finish! Also, the wine glasses were positioned in a straight line, not front and back, both as result of suggestions made by participants at the Italian Red #1 event! And my website designer says I don’t listen!!! 🙂
Ray Jones was most informative discussing the wines he presented. They were without a doubt the stars of the show! I found the least expensive of the bunch to be my price to value fave and was a bit disappointed with the Barbaresco. Nice but rather light for the price. Hopefully others will chime in as well.
