Margie celebrated a big birthday last Friday and we scheduled dinner for two at Pear and Horn. We’ve heard good things about them since they opened and finally got to check it out. For starters, we ordered a dozen Oysters Rockefeller that were perhaps as good a an example of Rockefeller either of us have had! Nice size and very tasty. Those were washed down with a glass of 2021 Raeburn Russian River Valley Chardonnay that paired well.
Margie ordered the Seared Scallops with vegetables. They were so good I am surprised she shared them with me! Five smaller size, but oh so tender. The veggies were to her liking, crisp and not soggy. The sauce was very light, sorta like a beurre blanc, with an unusual aftertaste. She rated the meal five stars.
I am a big fan of Frank Family Wines. I have some of their Chardonnay on the shelf at home. I ordered the Elk Ragu Pappardelle and selected the 2021 Frank Family Carneros Pinot Noir to accompany it. The large noodles were al dente and filling. The sauce was dark and rich and the ground elk excellent. It had been a while since I tasted a Frank Family Pinot and was reminded on the first sip how big, full and fruity it is. It was wonderful to the palette but overshadowed the Elk Ragu. Bad call on my part.
But I commented to Margie, we needed to pick up some ground elk at the Butcher Shop, make a rich dark sauce with mushrooms and onions, a bit more salt and pepper, and serve it over less massive noodles. Perhaps our next dinner party experiment!
The ambiance of the facility was nice, if a bit noisy. The front end was well handled, and the service was excellent. Our thanks to Pearl and Horn.
