Thursday night the Baylen Street Bottle Shop continued their outside events with a pig roast and wine show featuring Jon Priest, winemaker and general manager at Etude. While best known for their ‘Grace Benoist Ranch’ Carneros Pinot Noir, we also enjoyed the Etude ‘Fiddlestix’ Pinot from Santa Rita Hills, their Napa Cabernet, as well as their Carneros Pinot Gris, a nice sampling of the numerous offering from Etude. Jon spoke briefly about their approach of growing good grapes rather than “winemaking” the wines. The benefits of their approach was apparent in their wines and I splurged on a case of the Carneros Pinot.
The number of wines, four, plus an aperitif bubbly starter, was by far more well received and enjoyed more so as a serious wine tasting and food event by this writer, than those wine tastings where the number and/or varieties of wines are so numerous as to confuse the senses and the palette.
Ian and the crew were most accommodating at this event and noticeably, really catering to the patrons. Comments were very positive from all those I spoke with. In addition to the roast pig, there were lamb lollipops that were delicious, Elk meatballs, baked and raw oysters, and a charcuterie table. So, to those who deferred on the roast pig, they should expect to be coerced into attending any potential upcoming similar events!
